ILP OFFERS UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY IN INTERNATIONAL LAW AND GLOBAL AFFAIRS

The International Legal Partnership (ILP) today announced an exciting pilot research program which will focus on issues related to international, transnational and public law. The work done in this project will form a fundamental component of ILP's institutional development as the organization works towards developing a permanent research centre.

This initiative will allow up to 3 Osgoode students to develop critical research and writing skills in a collaborative and supportive learning environment. Together, they will tackle some of the most pressing legal issues arising from an increasingly globalized world. Participants will produce a series of short legal briefs, with an opportunity to get these briefs published in a variety of sources. Students will further benefit as they:

  • Develop vital legal skills
  • Meet fun and interesting new people
  • Play a central part in an innovative research agenda
  • Add something truly unique to your resume
This program will run take part in a running from January to March 2009 and is ideal for students interested in being involved at the forefront of international legal research, or want to improve their legal research and writing skills. Interested students should send a resume, 2-page letter of interest and a writing sample to ilpcommunications@osgoode.yorku.ca by Friday, November 7th, 2008 at noon. Successful applicants will be informed by 5.00pm on Monday, November 10th.

ILP ANNOUNCES NEW ADVOCACY OPPORTUNITY WITH LEADING HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER


The International Legal Partnership (ILP) today announced a new partnership with leading Immigration and Human Rights lawyer, Lorne Waldman, Lorne Waldman & Associates.

This initiative will provide a select group of Osgoode students with the unique opportunity to apply their legal research and writing skills and engage in media-outrich on Human Rights Issues. The objective of this project is to enable law students to get hands-on experience developing and working on complex human rights litigation files. The focus is on substantive legal research and writing and litigation strategy planning and implementation.

Based in Toronto, Mr. Waldman has been involved in many cases with significant international dimensions, thus making this program a natural extension of ILP's work to support the development of international legal frameworks.

Students interested in applying for this project should submit a letter of interest and resume to ilpcommunications@osgoode.yorku.ca by Monday, October 27th, 2008. Applications will be reviewed by Mr. Waldman and up to 3 candidates will be chosen for this exceptional extra-curricular experience. Successful applicants will be notified by October 31st, 2008.

ILP FELLOWSHIPS APPROVED FOR OPIR CREDITS


The International Legal Partnership (ILP) today announced that Osgoode Public Interest Requirement credits (OPIR) have been approved for ILP summer fellows. Students involved with ILP committees that have a direct impact on public interest may also receive OPIR credits.

Beginning with the 2010 graduating class, every student is required to complete 40 hours of public interest, law-related volunteer work as a condition of graduation. “ILP members are working hard to promote a global legal education based on practical legal experience in developing countries. We are very excited that ILP summer fellows, and committee members that have a direct impact on the public interest, will now be credited as fulfilling all or part of their OPIR requirement” said Carole Piovesan, ILP Student Director.
